Kaş Festival Programme

June 26 was the 7th Annual International Meis to Kaş Canoe and Swimming Contest. Castellorizo, known in Greek as Castellorizon, Kastelorizo or Megisti and in Turkish as Meis, is the smallest and most easterly of the Dodecanese Islands situated roughly half-way between the well-known Island of Rhodes and the major Turkish Port of Antalya. The race is a little over six kilometres between harbours.

Özkan Yılmaz and the Kaş Film Studio (by Ayşe Dağıstanlı)

In late June, I met with Özkan Yılmaz. His name became familiar to many of us after one of the films he produced won the best film award at the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival and also the Venice Film Festival. Özkan Yılmaz's life story is similar to many other successful life stories. He first came to Kaş 12 years ago and fell in love with it. He said to himself "One day I will move to Kaş." Once this dream became true he didn't just lie down and relax but he listened to his conscience and started to look for answers to "How can I repay Kaş for all that I get from her?" What I find special about his coming to Kaş is his wanting to pay back to Kaş what Kaş has given to him.

Apple Tea Film Makers

Three Short Films Show by Kaş high school students were shown on June 25th, the second day of the XIV International Lycian/Kaş Culture and Art Festival on the stage set up at the Kaş Harbour. These young people called themselves the Apple Tea Film Makers. Many people who saw these films were surprised!

Silver Harmoni is one of the many shops along Ibrahim Serin Caddesi, one of the shopping areas which starts off from the town centre. Yusuf Gökben and Karen Henry run Silver Harmoni which has an extensive collection of jewellery. There are thousands of pieces to suit all tastes and budgets. The jewellery is sourced from a variety of places. Some pieces are made in store, others are made by artisans in small workshops around Turkey. There are also pieces from all around the world that have been purchased during their travels. The number and quality of the unusual pieces is something that the customers often comment on.

Orhan and Martina Yılmaz, along with their children Melissa and Timur, are the owners of Turqueria, a shop full of beautiful and interesting antiques and art work. Turqueria sells mainly gravures (a printing process using recessed areas on a metal cylinder that hold the ink), maps, old paintings, technical tools, pocket and wrist watches, old copper objects, Ottoman fabrics and jewellery.

Şeyda Maraş is a diver, underwater photographer and professional cinematographer who specializes in underwater video projects. She currently works on the Bougainville Diving Boat and takes photos of divers and try divers. Akif Gürsoy is on the sales staff at Bougainville Travel in Kaş, Turkey. Akif was born in 1964 in Turkey, but his family left immediately for Germany, where he lived until he was 13 years old. German is his native language, even though he has been away from Germany for more than 33 years. He learned English at Middle East Technical University (METU) studying management. Ayşe Bulut Sakarya, is the front office account manager for Bougainville Travel. Ayşe was born in Kaş but because her father worked in Ziraat Bank, she lived in Finike for several years and finished elementary school there. Her family returned to Kaş and she finished high school here. After retiring, her father opened a small market or bakkal in Kaş. It became a family business and Ayşe worked there after school. The bakkal closed after supermarkets started opening in Kaş.

Ülkü Erdoğan is one of the Kaş artists, an ex-pat from Istanbul. She lives in Gökseki with her husband Sunder who is also an artist who does caricatures and model boat building.

Sunder Erdoğan is a local artist possessing not one but two interesting talents; he is a model boat builder and caricaturist. Sunder was raised in the Fener-Balat district of Istanbul and first came to Kaş in 1990. He likes to reminisce about the variety of customs and cultures in his ancient home district. However, he really becomes animated when he speaks about his work as a caricaturist and model boat builder.

To see the sites in the two most famous tourist areas of Istanbul, Sultanahmet and Taksim, should not take the average tourist more than 4 days. Emre Çevikel met recently with Yaşar Sarıca and asked him about his experiences with Bougainville Travel. Yaşar is 32 years old and said he has been with Bougainville Travel every year since 1996 except for his 2 year stretch in the military. He was 18 when he started working at BT and he has become, in Turkish, what is commonly called a "joker" or jack of all trades, but for sure, he is also a master of them all. He drives the transfer bus to and from the airport, he is an assistant tour guide for trekking, canyoning, and mountain biking and he sometimes pitches in and helps the staff at the Oreo Hotel in Kaş.

Most people interested in hiking and trekking have heard of The Lycian Way: the 500 km long-distance walking route between Fethiye and Antalya on the Mediterranean Coast has been described as one of the world's top 10 walks. Here in Kaş we're roughly at the half-way point. As much of the route is coastal the best time to tackle the route (or bits of it!) is in Spring or Autumn. It's simply too hot in the Summer.

Mevlana Celaleddin Belhi-Rumi, the great 13th-century Sufi (Islamic mystic) poet, was born in 30 September 1207 in Balkh, presently Afghanistan.

He lived almost all of his life in Konya, Turkey, and died there 17 December 1273. He is arguably one of the most famous poets in the world. In Turkey he is referred to as Mevlana (the Turkish spelling of Maulana - which means 'Our Master').

Alex Smith was born, raised and lived the vast majority of his life in the North West of England. He is married to Barbara with two adult step children aged 30 and 26. Alex and Barbara have always enjoyed the area around Kaş, Turkey ever since they first visited in 1998 and immediately fell in love with the town. They returned intermittently in the following years and finally moved here in 2007 after retiring from their teaching jobs. We recently met with Tunç Üvendire who is a professional photographer and asked him about his work as an artist. Along with his wife Semra Yilmaz Üvendire, they have created Silk Road Shop (http://www.silkroad-shop.com/) which sells collected ethnic textiles, jewellery, artifacts and antique handicrafts collected from their travels on the ancient silk road from Turkey to China. Tunç is a many faceted artist, he is also a composer of children's songs and is about to release his first CD.

Lycian Way - Kyaneai

Kyaneai (or Cyaneae in Greek) means "dark blue" and also "clashing rocks", though nobody knows why it was so named or which meaning it is supposed to have. Kyaneai is famous for its many sarcophagi which surround the site. There may be over 300 of them and this place has the most sarcophagi of any Lycian site.

Elmalı Grease Wrestling

Elmali, Turkey, located about 70 km from Kaş, in the mountain region north, hosts Kırkpınar, a grease wrestling or yağlı güreş tournament every year where the wrestlers douse themselves with olive oil.

This is the 658th year of oil wrestling and the dates are August 6 - 8. There will be celebrations in Elmalı all the week before..

The event takes place in the large stadium. Wrestlers come from all over Turkey, to engage in this highly competitive sport made popular long ago in Ottoman times. The contest lasts for three days and over 100 wrestlers participate.

Veske: Paragliding Captain

Veske is currently the team captain of the paragliding team of Bougainville Travel and comes originally from Izmir. When Veske was 16 years old, he did his first parachute jump out of an airplane. Later, he worked as a skydive instructor to the THK (Türk Hava Kurumu) or Turkish Air Forces, and jumped for the skydive national team of Turkey.

Tuna Özdemir has been working with Bougainville Travel, Adventure, Hotels, and Diving (BT) since 2001 with time out for his time in the military. Tuna is originally from Ankara and made his move to Kaş in 2004. In 2000, Tuna graduated from Başkent University in Ankara specializing in Tourist Guiding, a tough course which includes a very difficult foreign language exam. His was in English but he also speaks German. Most of the BT guides speak more than one foreign language.

It was a big occasion with the best part of a 1000 family and guests participating at the Çerçiler Receptıon Rooms. Kaş Adventure Travel and Diving was well represented at the recent Eastern Mediterranean International Tourism & Travel Fair (EMITT 2010 from the 14th to the 17th February) in Istanbul at the TUYAP Beylikdüzü Exhibition Center. The fair concentrated much more on Outdoor Tourism and we made some interesting new contacts as well as met many old friends.
